ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's golf team is in a tie for 26th place after the first round of the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. UNM carded a 293 (+9) after 18 holes and is even with Georgia and Alabama-Birmingham. The first round was completed early Thursday after rain postponed the tournament Wednesday afternoon at Ohio State's Scarlet Course. Illinois and Georgia Tech led the field after round one with a 277 (-7). Washington was third at 279 (-5)

Individually, UNM was led by true freshman Madalitso Muthiya. Playing in the number five position for the Lobos, Muthiya carded a first round total of 72 (+1) to finish T62nd. He bogeyed the first two holes, but played his final 16 holes at one-under. Wil Collins shot 73 (+2) to finish T89th, while Jay Reynolds and Scott Hailes shot 74 (+3) to finish T107th. Colorado's Ben Portie and Washington¹s Brock MacKenzie share the individual lead at 66 (-5).

UNM is in the morning group for the second round of play. The Lobos teed off around 7 a.m. (MDT). Their progress can be followed at www.golfstatlive.com.
