Men's Golf Struggles In 1st Round Of NCAA Regional
May 17, 2001
Corvallis, Oregon - The University of New Mexico men's golf team will have an uphill climb in its attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Lobos are in 25th place after stumbling to an opening-round score of 305 Thursday at the NCAA West Regional being held at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. UNM trails first-round leader Arizona State by 22 shots. Only 10 schools in the 27-team, 54-hole tournament advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Durham, N.C. Entering the regional as one of the top-three seeds and ranked no lower than 16th in the three national polls, UNM shot 300 or higher for only the fifth time in 35 competitive rounds this season. The Lobos are 12 strokes behind 10th-place Pepperdine. Individually, senior Joel Hendry led UNM with an even-par 72. He was the only Lobo to shoot par or better. Second-round action continues Friday. New Mexico tees off at 8:30 a.m. MDT.
