TCU Captures 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship
May 2, 2009 TUCSON, Ariz. - 2009 MWC Men's Golf Championship Central • Day 3 ResultsNo. 17 TCU captured the 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship at OMNI Tucson National Resort after defeating #22 San Diego State in a team playoff. The Horned Frogs and Aztecs both set the MWC Championship record for lowest team score for 54-holes with their respective totals of 8-under 844. TCU fired a third-round score of 4-over-par 288, while San Diego State was the only team to break par on the final day, posting a 3-under 281. The Horned Frogs secured the team championship after defeating the Aztecs on the first playoff hole. This is TCU's first MWC men's golf title since joining the Conference in 2005, while the Aztecs finish second for the fourth time in the 10-year history of the league. UNLV came in third overall with a 7-under 845, with New Mexico following in fourth with a 4-under 848. Defending team champion Colorado State was fifth with a 2-over 854, followed by BYU in sixth (856), Wyoming in seventh (873), Air Force eighth (875) and Utah ninth (879). New Mexico senior Steve Saunders won the individual championship with a 9-under 204, setting two individual records for both 54-hole low score and largest winning margin, with a four shot victory. These marks put Saunders' total MWC Championship records for the week at three, after tying an MWC Championship single-round record of 64 in yesterday's second round. Saunders made 12 total birdies and one eagle over the course of the championship. Second place finisher Ji Moon of UNLV shot a 5-under 208, including a 2-over 73 today, while TCU's Johan de Beer, Tom Hoge, and San Diego State's Bryan Martin tied for third with a identical scores of 4-under 209. The tournament had six individual's record eagles over the 54-holes, including five in the final round. SDSU's Martin led the tournament with 16 birdies, while TCU's Travis Woolf collected the most par holes with 45. The top 10 individuals all posted scores below par, with four of the nine teams also coming in below par, marking an MWC Championship first for both. San Diego State had all five golfers shoot 72 or better on the final day and concluded the tournament with four players in the Top 10.
