LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming seniors Jake Hunter and David Hearn find themselves in a tie for 16th place entering Wednesday's final round of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship. The Cowboys shot a team score of 306 on Tuesday, improving by 11 strokes from their opening round score of 317, and moved into a tie with UNLV for sixth place at 623.

Hunter shot a six-over par round of 78 on Tuesday to go with an opening round score of 76 and will take a 154 total into the final 18-hole round on Wednesday. Hearn rebounded from an opening round 82 by firing an even par round 72 on Tuesday to also post a 154 total after 36 holes. Wyoming's third senior, Kevin Kayden, also enjoyed an excellent round on Tuesday, firing a four-over par 76. John Lepak of San Diego State and Jesse Hibler of Brigham Young are tied for the individual lead at three-over par 147. UW's Hunter and Hearn are only seven strokes out of the lead with one round to play.

New Mexico shot the low round of the day with a three-under par round of 285 on Tuesday to move from fifth place into a tie for first with BYU.

"Jake (Hunter) put another solid round on the board today," said UW head golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Jake has been one of our most consistent players throughout his career. If he can put together another solid round tomorrow, he can put a great finish on his college career. "David (Hearn) really did a nice job of battling back today after a disappointing round on Monday. He was one of only seven individuals today to shoot par or better. "Our third senior, Kevin Kayden, also put up a very good round with a 76. "I know everyone on the team wants to put up a great score on Wednesday to complete the regular season on an up note for our three seniors. We can still have an opportunity to make a move on Utah. We just have to maintain our focus in the less than ideal weather conditions."

Competitors were faced with 15-25 mile per hour winds and temperatures in the low 50s throughout Tuesday's round. This season's MWC Men's Golf Championship is being played at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The championship is being contested on the Crosswater Course at the Sunriver Resort. Crosswater measures 7,193 yards and plays to a par of 72.

The third and final round will be played on Wednesday, May 2. The final round is scheduled to tee off at 11 a.m., Mountain time.
