TCU Continues Lead After Second Round of 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship
May 1, 2009 TUCSON, Ariz. - 2009 MWC Men's Golf Championship Central • Day 2 ResultsNo. 17 TCU maintained its lead after 36-holes of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship at OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. The Horned Frogs carded a 4-under-par 280 today and have set the MWC Championship record for 36-holes with their current score of 12-under 560. The Frogs hold a four-shot lead over UNLV (560), who posted a 13-under 271 today. New Mexico, San Diego State, and defending champion Colorado State are tied for third position with a 5-under 563. New Mexico senior Steve Saunders took over the individual lead after tying an MWC Championship single-round record of 64 today. His 36-hole total of 133 puts him at 9-under on the par 71, 7,163-yard Catalina Course. Saunders has made 10 total birdies over the first two days and currently holds a two-stroke lead over UNLV sophomore Ji Moon and TCU freshman Johan de Beer. Moon and de Beer have both posted 36-hole totals of 7-under 135. Day one leader Tom Hoge (67-70) of TCU is currently tied for fourth place with Bryan Martin (68-69) of San Diego State at 5-under 137. Defending individual champion Eddie Olson of UNLV posted a 65 in the second round and is five strokes back of the leader at 4-under 138. Fifteen individual players are currently below par after two days, with six of the nine teams coming in even-par or better. UNLV posted a MWC Championship single-round record of 271 in the second round, breaking the 272 mark by BYU in the first round of the 2007 tournament. The concluding third round of the 2009 MWC Men's Golf Championship will begin at 7 a.m. (PT) Saturday morning. The public is invited to come out and watch some of the best teams in collegiate golf.
