LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming senior Jake Hunter shot an opening round 76 on Monday at the 2001 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship, and is tied for seventh place. Hunter's four-over par round places him just four shots out of the lead entering Tuesday's second of three rounds.

The Wyoming Cowboys sit in seventh place, with a team score of 317, and are well within striking distance of the rest of the field. Only four shots separate UW from fourth-place Utah. Utah shot an opening round 313. New Mexico is in fifth at 314. UNLV is in sixth at 316, and then come the Cowboys at 317. Colorado State leads the team competition with a first round score of 301. BYU is second at 305, and San Diego State sits in third at 307. James Kurtenbach of Colorado State shot an even par round of 72 to take the first round individual lead.

"We received nice production from Jake (Hunter) and Kurt (Kowaluk) today with rounds of 76 and 78 respectively," said UW head golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "David (Hearn), Mike (Urbatchka) and Kevin (Kayden) struggled a little bit, and so when that happens to three players on the same day, it makes it difficult to make a move in the team competition.

"With the difficulty of the course we're playing and the weather conditions on Monday, Jake's and Kurt's scores were very impressive.

"We have two more rounds to go, and are right there with the majority of the field. I told the guys after the first round that if we can make some putts tomorrow, we can jump right back into the thick of this tournament."

Hunter has played in every regular season tournament for the Cowboys during his four-year career in Laramie. This week's tournament marks his 45th consecutive as a member of the Wyoming squad. He finished 22nd at the 2000 MWC Championship.

Hearn, who finished in a tie for eighth at last year's MWC Championship, has battled his way back from a wrist injury suffered this past winter. He finished 14th in his last outing at the BYU Cougar Classic. Hearn is looking to qualify for his third consecutive NCAA West Regional.

This season's MWC Men's Golf Championship is being played at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The championship is being contested on the Crosswater Course at the Sunriver Resort. Crosswater measures 7,193 yards and plays to a par of 72.

Tuesday at 11 a.m., Mountain time, the second round will tee off. The third and final round will be played on Wednesday, May 2. The final round is also scheduled to tee off at 11 a.m.
