TCU Leads After First Round of 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship

No. 17 TCU carded an 8-under-par 276 today to secure the lead after the first round of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship at OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. The Horned Frogs hold a 7-shot lead over second place and 22nd ranked San Diego State, which turned in a 1-under 283. New Mexico is currently in third position with an even-par 284, while No. 24 UNLV is fourth with a 5-over 289. Defending champion Colorado State is tied with BYU and Utah for fifth place after each shot identical scores of 7-over 291. TCU sophomore Tom Hoge is the first-round individual leader after firing a 4-under-par 67 on the par 71, 7,163-yard Catalina Course. Hoge made six birdies on the day and currently holds a one-stroke lead over UNLV's Ji Moon and San Diego State's Bryan Martin. Moon and Martin both carded a 3-under 68. Today's first round featured 11 players shooting even-par or better, including four of the five golfers from tournament leader TCU. Colorado State junior Riley Arp and San Diego State senior Bryan Martin led way with seven birdie holes apiece, while TCU freshman Alexander Knappe carded the only eagle hole of the day. Defending individual champion Eddie Olson of UNLV is currently tied for 22nd place. The junior posted a 2-over 73 in the first round. The second round of the 2009 MWC Men's Golf Championship will begin at 7 a.m. (PT) Friday morning, followed by the final 18-holes Saturday at 7 a.m. The public is invited to come out and watch some of the best teams in collegiate golf.
