TUCSON, Ariz. - BYU fired a 12-under-par 272 to garner the lead after the first round of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Omni Tucson National Golf Course and Resort. The Cougars hold a three-shot lead over UNLV which carded a nine-under 275. BYU's score of 272 is a new MWC championship first-round record, eclipsing New Mexico's mark of 276 at the 2003 championship in Sunriver, Ore. San Diego State is currently third after posting a two-under 282, followed by TCU in fourth with an even-par 284. Colorado State is fifth at three-over 287 and four-time defending champion New Mexico is sixth with a five-over 289 after the first 18 holes. The 2007 championship marks the first time in the eight-year history of the MWC that all nine teams carded sub-300 scores in a single round.

The individual race is tight as 19 golfers posted even-par or better rounds on the first day of the tournament. UNLV sophomore Seung-su Han fired a six-under par 65 on the par 71, 7,136-yard Catalina Course and is currently the leader by one-stroke over BYU senior Clay Ogden. Ogden carded a five-under 66, followed by San Diego State's Adam Porzak in third with a four-under 67.

The second round of the 2007 MWC Men's Golf Championship will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning, followed by the final 18-holes on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. The public is invited to come out and watch some of the best teams in collegiate golf.
