PROVO, Utah - Snow and cold weather forced the cancellation of the third and final round of the BYU Ben Hogan Cougar Classic Saturday. Colorado State finished the event, shortened to 36 holes, tied for first following play Friday at the 6,950-yard, par-72, Riverside Country Club.

Coach Jamie Bermel's team shot a seven-under par 569 (284-285), tying with host BYU and Nevada for the top spot, one shot ahead of Fresno State, the only four teams to shoot below par Friday.

Colorado State finished the first round in fifth place, then carded the best team score in the second round, 285, to move into a tie for the top spot.

Martin Laird, a sophomore from Bearsden, UK, shot a four-under 140 and was in sixth place to lead the Rams. Laird carded back-to-back 70's Friday. He was one of four Rams among the top 16 players through two rounds, and all five Rams were among the top 33. Brett Tobyne, two under at 142, tied for ninth, while Tommy Sharp, one-under, was at 143 and tied for 14th. John Hayes was tied for 16th after shooting a two-round, even-par 144. David Schultz shot a four-over 148 was tied for 33rd.

Friday, the Rams recorded four rounds below par, including two by Laird, one by Tobyne, and the other by Sharp. Tobyne and Hayes (twice) shot par for a round.

The 54-hole, two-day event concludes Saturday.
