Dec. 26, 2002

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Colorado State University's football team arrived in Memphis Thursday afternoon set to begin final preparations for the team's Dec. 31 AXA Liberty Bowl game against TCU.

Coach Sonny Lubick's team returns to Memphis for the third time in four seasons, having won the 2002 Mountain West Conference title outright. The Rams are also ranked in both major top 25 polls. Colorado State faces Conference USA champion TCU, which finished 9-2.

Lubick and a majority of his players, plus coaches staff members, support staff, and families left Fort Collins-Loveland Airport about 9:30 a.m. MT, and landed in Memphis shortly after noon.

The team assembled at the Rams' Memphis hotel headquarters before travelling to a welcoming event staged by Liberty Bowl officials.

Friday, CSU and TCU will be featured at a bowl luncheon, then the Rams begin the first of four practice days in Memphis leading up to the bowl game.

"I think that the players enjoyed having the chance to see their families for Christmas," said Lubick, who dismissed his team in Fort Collins last Sunday in time for most players to return home prior to coming to Memphis.

"Now, we'll really focus on getting ready for the game. We have most of our stuff already in, because when you get here, there are so many distractions, it's easier to lose focus."

Game time is 1:30 p.m. MT/2:30 p.m. CT. The game can be heard statewide on the Colorado State Sports Radio Network, and will be shown by ESPN.
