Football Field Unites Gbaja-Biamilas The Oakland Tribune Feature Story
Dec. 22, 2003
By Jerry McDonald OAKLAND - It's been a remarkable path that led the Gbaja-Biamila brothers to tonight's reunion at Network Associates Coliseum, one that would have never happened if not for a phone call in the summer of 1996. Akbar Gbaja-Biamila's first love was basketball. It came easier than football, and enabled him to escape the imposing shadow of his brother Kabeer. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was an explosive pass rusher and an all-Central City selection from Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles. By 1996, Kabeer had moved on to San Diego State and Akbar was curious. He called Crenshaw football coach Robert Garrett at home one day and asked if he could come out for the team. Garrett was reluctant since Akbar had not been sweating with the team during summer camps and weight lifting. Garrett also taught two older Gbaja-Biamila brothers, Foley and Tony, in middle school, so he relented and gave Akbar No.30, the same as Kabeer. Akbar played on the defensive line, just as Kabeer did.
