Bronco Bolts For BYU The Albuquerque Tribune Feature Story
Dec. 17, 2002
By Brad Moore ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Saying he'd had to wrestle with a moral decision, Bronco Mendenhall announced today he is leaving the University of New Mexico football team to become defensive coordinator at Brigham Young University. Mendenhall, the Lobos' associate head coach and defensive coordinator, will remain with the Lobos through the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 25, when they will play UCLA. His departure was announced this afternoon at a news conference three hours after his boss, UNM head coach Rocky Long, gave an ultimatum that he wanted the week-long talks between Mendenhall and BYU to be resolved, or "I'll decide for them." "We wish the best for him," Long said at the later news conference. "He's done a great job here. We will remain friends."
