Va. Tech, Air Force Follow Similar Path Two once-unbeaten teams settle for date in San Francisco bowl.

By Jim Benton AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - After eight games this season, Virginia Tech was unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the nation. The Hokies probably had thoughts of playing in the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl or even the Fiesta Bowl. Virginia Tech, now ranked No. 21, will instead be playing Air Force on Dec. 31 in the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl at Pacific Bell Park. "Our players are extremely excited about coming to San Francisco, our coaches are extremely excited and I think our fans are," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said Monday. "I'm hoping we are going to have a great turnout. We've always been known as a great travel team and this is a perfect time to show that once again.
