SAN FRANCISCO - Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer says he's glad his team is facing Air Force in a bowl game rather than in the regular season.

"I don't think we could get ready for them in a week," Beamer said. "With this extra time, hopefully we can get lined up right."

Virginia Tech (9-4) and Air Force (8-4) meet in the inaugural Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl on New Year's Eve at Pacific Bell Park.

Beamer was referring to the difficulties of preparing to play Air Force -- a team that runs a confusing option offense and throws in assorted complexities on defense and special teams.
