Dec. 15, 2006

COLROADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Two Mountain West Conference football seniors have been named Associated Press Football All-Americans. Utah's Eric Weddle was named to the second team, while BYU's Johnny Harline was honored on the third team.

This marks Weddle's seventh All-America honor of the season. The Alta Loma, Calif., native is one of just eight Utes ever to make an AP All-America team, and the first since 2002, when offensive lineman Jordan Gross earned consensus All-America honors. Weddle is Utah's first defensive AP All-American since Luther Elliss achieved consensus All-America status in 1994. Utah's other AP All-Americans were second-team quarterback Lee Grosscup (1957), second-team offensive lineman Carlton Walker (1984), third-team running back Earl Pomeroy (1929), third-team defensive lineman Steve Clark (1981) and third-team offensive lineman Anthony Brown (1994).

Harline, a native of Orem, Utah, leads the BYU roster with 754 yards on the season. The 6-foot-4, 238-pound senior has also been credited with 11 touchdown receptions to lead all tight ends in the nation. Harline had a career day against Utah, grabbing three touchdown receptions in the Cougars' 33-31 victory over the Utes. Harline was twice featured on ESPN SportsCenter's Play of the Day, receiving national recognition for his one-handed touchdown grab against No. 15 TCU and his game-winning touchdown reception against Utah.

Harline has been credited with at least 50 yards receiving in eight games during the 2006 season, including six games over 70 yards. He had over 100 yards receiving in two of the Cougars' final three games. Harline finished the 2006 season as one of the top tight ends in the country. Harline's 11 touchdowns and 15.4 yards-per-reception ranked tops among the eight semifinalists for the Mackey Award.
