1999 Air Force Season in Review Falcons suffer through injury-riddled campaign.
Dec. 13, 1999 * AFA’s 6-5 record marks the school’s sixth consecutive winning season and ninth in the last 10 years. * Head Coach Fisher DeBerry became the winningest coach in service academy history earlier this season when AFA defeated Washington. DeBerry has guided the Academy to 126 wins. He passed Army’s Red Blaik, who won 121 from 1941-58. * AFA finished the season ranked second in the Mountain West in scoring defense with a 19.8 average. Over the past three seasons, AFA has allowed just 15.1 points per game. AFA, while ranked 26th nationally in scoring defense this season, won the conference title in scoring defense the two previous seasons. AFA allowed 12.4 to rank third nationally in 1997 and 13.3 to rank sixth nationally in 1998. * AFA is 28-15 during the Fisher DeBerry era in November. The team was 2-2 this season. * Despite the fact AFA lost its last three road games this season, the team is 24-11 overall and 17-8 in conference road games since 1994. The Falcons have had a .500 or better road record for six consecutive seasons. * AFA ranks eighth nationally over the last three seasons with 28 wins. The team is 28-10 over that span to lead the Mountain West Conference in total wins. * AFA wrapped up is 16th conference rushing title this season with a 285.5 average. AFA is ranked second nationally in rushing to mark the 11th time in the last 16 seasons the team has finished in the top five nationally. * The Falcons senior class finished with a 34-14 record to become the fourth winningest class in AFA history. * AFA blocked eight kicks this season, including two in the final game of the season vs. New Mexico. The Falcons blocked 59 kicks in the 1990s to rank second nationally to Virginia Tech, which blocked 64. * Corey Nelson led the team in blocked kicks with 3.5 this season. His 3.5 blocks are the most by a Falcon since Tim Curry blocked four last season. Nelson blocked two kicks on Nov. 18 at Colorado State. * AFA won its 13th Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy this season by beating Army and Navy. The Falcons defeated Navy, 19-14, in Annapolis, Md., and Army, 28-0, in Falcon Stadium. The 13 trophy titles is more than Army (6) and Navy (5) have combined. * Matt Farmer finished the season as the team’s leading receiver for the second consecutive year. Farmer ends his career ranked second in AFA history for players in the option era with 92 catches for 1,502 yards. He is the first cadet to ever be named to the Biletnikof Award Watch List.
* Jackson Whiting completed the first perfect season in AFA history. Whiting hit all 12 field goal attempts and was 26 of 26 in PATs this season. Whiting finished his career as the most accurate kicker in AFA history, hitting 19 of 23 field goals.
