Rams Have One Workout Remaining In Fort Collins

Colorado State continues preparation for New Orleans Bowl.

Dec. 12, 2001

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State University's football team has one workout remaining in Fort Collins Thursday afternoon before departing the following morning for the team's third consecutive bowl trip. Colorado State, 6-5 and the runnerup in the Mountain West Conference with a 5-2 record, faces the University of North Texas Dec. 18 in the first-ever New Orleans Bowl (6 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT-ESPN2).

Wednesday, ninth-year head coach Sonny Lubick put his team through a 90-minute practice session as the Rams continued their bowl preparations.

"I know that it can be difficult for the players to be focused, because they are concentrating on final examinations," said Lubick of his team. "But, we came out and had a pretty good workout. We'll try and have another good practice Thursday, then get ready to go to New Orleans."

Lubick said the Rams would work out in sweatsuits Thursday, the team's final practice in Fort Collins, the board buses Friday morning for the trip.

Colorado State is making the program's third consecutive bowl trip - a school first - and the sixth bowl trip in Lubick's nine seasons, more than any other MWC team over the same span and among the most in the nation.

"I believe this is a tribute to the senior leadership that we have on this team," Lubick said. "When we were 2-4, it would have been easy to jump ship and cash it in. But these players hung together, and the coaches hung in there, too, and turned it around. I can't say enough about the character on this team."

The game is also the first time since 1972 that the Rams will play a game in an indoor stadium. That season, the rams lost 48-13 to the University of Houston in a game played in the Astrodome.

Offensive lineman Broderick Lancaster, who suffered a sprained knee the fifth game of the season against the University of Louisville, remains questionable for the game. Defensive tackle Patrick Goodpaster, who severely cut his arm two weeks ago in a fall at his home, is out. The Rams appear relatively healthy for the game besides those players.

Lubick also said several Rams' players will participate in postseason all-star games, including:

  • Paradise Gridiron Classic: Broc Finlayson, Broderick Lancaster, Ameer Lowe, Jose Ochoa, Duan Ruff, Lucas Smith, Thal Woods
  • Sunshine Gridiron Classic: Pete Rebstock, Aaron Sprague
  • Hula Bowl: Coach Sonny Lubick, Pete Rebstock
