BYU Football Injury Update Cougars begin preparations for the 2001 Liberty Bowl.
Dec. 11, 2001
PROVO, Utah - As the Cougars begin preparations for the 2001 Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 31, team trainers will have their work cut out for them.
Wide receiver Reno Mahe underwent orthoscopic surgery today to determine the extent of his knee injury, sustained at Hawaii. Doctors discovered a partial tear in his right posterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscus. Mahe will begin treatment tomorrow morning and is expected to begin practicing in approximately 10 days. Mahe should be ready to play on Dec. 31 and is being listed as "probable" on the depth chart.
Senior quarterback Brandon Doman will not practice this week after breaking a rib against Hawaii. Doman is expected to return to practice next week and is also being listed as "probable" for the Cougars' match-up against Louisville.
Doak Walker winner Luke Staley remains listed as questionable for the Liberty Bowl. Staley, who broke his leg against Mississippi State, will have another series of x-rays at the end of the week to determine the amount of calcium being built up around the injury. It is expected Staley will need another 2-3 weeks before he can begin weight-bearing work outs. Currently, Staley is undergoing bone-stimulator treatments and has been doing conditioning work in the pool.
Running back Paul Peterson sustained a broken wrist at Hawaii and will not practice this week. BYU head trainer George Curtis is working on a rubberized cast that will allow Peterson to begin practice next week. Peterson is expected to be ready for the Liberty Bowl.
Running back Ned Stearns also suffered a broken wrist at Hawaii. Stearns underwent surgery today to insert a pin in his fractured wrist. He will also be fitted with a cast and is expected to return to practice as early as next week. Stearns has been listed as "will play" against Louisville.
The team will practice on Thursday and Friday this week, beginning at 3 p.m. (MST). The team will also practice on Saturday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m. (MST).
