AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force Academy coach Fisher DeBerry will get together with his friend Frank Beamer on New Year's Eve.

Beamer's No. 21 Virginia Tech Hokies (9-4) were officially named Sunday to play against the Falcons (8-4) in the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl at 8:30 p.m. MST Dec. 31 at Pacific Bell Park.

"Frankie Beamer is a real close friend of mine," DeBerry said. "I admire and respect so much the job he has done at his alma mater at Virginia Tech. I competed against him when he was an assistant back at South Carolina when I was back there. We visit quite often on the phone. We have to be ready to play our best."

Virginia Tech will be making its 10th consecutive appearance in a bowl game and will be playing as far away from home as ever.

The farthest west the Hokies have played was in the 1946 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.
