Diary of a Long Season Aztecs cornerback Jeff Shoate is a student-athlete and a husband-father. To make it all work it took a balancing act.
Dec. 10, 2002
By Tom Shanahan SAN DIEGO - Teammates call him "The Old Man." When other San Diego State football players finish practice, their worries are basically limited to the Aztecs' next opponent, their class work or a messy roommate getting on their nerves. Jeff Shoate's day includes the real world. His roommates are his wife, Ronisha, and his 3-year-old son, Jesiah. Shoate's responsibilities as a college student and starting cornerback include attending class, homework and study time, lifting weights, team meetings, practice and games. He also takes Jesiah to day care, picks up his wife from her classes at San Diego City College, works a part-time night job at Blockbuster video and does his share of upkeep around the two-bedroom apartment, including his specific responsibilities of ironing, vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom.
