Air Force Taking 8-4 Record To First San Francisco Bowl The Denver Post Feature Story
Dec. 3, 2002
By Irv Moss AIR FORCE ACADEMY - Air Force was invited to one of the most popular tourist spots in the world Monday when the Falcons were selected to play in the inaugural San Francisco Bowl on Dec. 31. The Falcons learned of their postseason destination after an afternoon practice session. They probably will play Boston College or Virginia Tech of the Big East. The invitation was made after the Las Vegas Bowl invited New Mexico, the Mountain West Conference runner-up. "We're honored to make the United States Air Force Academy the first team ever selected to play in our game," said Gary Cavalli, executive director of the San Francisco Bowl. Cavalli indicated the payoff from the New Year's Eve game will be in the range of $800,000 per team. Scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. start at Pacific Bell Park, the game will be televised by ESPN2. Tickets cost $65, $50 and $40.
