Interviews By Aztecs Near End The San Diego Union-Tribune Feature Story
Dec. 3, 2001
By Tom Shanahan SAN DIEGO - UNLV coach John Robinson made one final effort with a telephone call last week to San Diego State officials in hopes of helping Hue Jackson move into the first pool of candidates for the Aztecs' vacant football position, sources say. But the interview process is expected to end today after Oregon offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford finishes his meetings with SDSU athletic director Rick Bay and officials. Jackson, 36, the Washington Redskins' running backs coach, was Robinson's offensive coordinator at USC in 1997. The candidates already interviewed are Denver Broncos receivers coach Karl Dorrell, a Helix High alumnus, Texas A&M offensive coordinator Dino Babers, a Morse High graduate, former Arizona and Hawaii head coach Dick Tomey, former Oregon and St. Louis Rams head coach Rich Brooks, and Palomar College head coach Tom Craft, SDSU's offensive coordinator under former head coach Ted Tollner from 1994-96. Bay said he wants to name a head coach as soon as possible, even as early as midweek, so the new staff can get started on recruiting. Factors that could delay Bay's timetable are negotiations or a candidate dropping out. Bay said Friday he and the interview committee consider the first pool of candidates all capable of the job, making it unlikely there will be a second pool. "You take as much time as you think you'll need to make the decision you're most comfortable with," Bay said. "I might want to bring somebody back a second time if I feel that's necessary." Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti is rumored to be on the short list for Notre Dame's job after the school yesterday fired Bob Davie. That would open up Oregon for Tedford, but Oregon sources said they don't expect Bellotti to aggressively pursue the Notre Dame position.
