Five Mountain West Football Players Honored as 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans

Five first-team selections a Conference high

Nov. 26, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference had five student-athletes named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First-Team in football as announced today by CoSIDA. The Mountain West had the second-highest total of first-team selections behind only the Big Ten's seven honorees. The five first-team accolades are the most in conference history, surpassing its previous high of three in 2004.

The Mountain West's Academic All-America first-team honorees include BYU LB Matt Bauman, DB Kellen Fowler and OL David Oswald, New Mexico LB Zach Arnett, and Utah PK/P Louie Sakoda.

BYU's three first-team selections are tied for the second-most nationally with North Dakota State, and behind only Penn State's four first-team honorees. BYU is the first MWC institution to have three Academic All-America First-Team selections.

To be eligible for the award, a player must be in at least his second year of athletic eligibility, be a first-team or key performer and carry a cumulative 3.30 grade point average (GPA). This GPA standard is higher than the 3.2 required in previous years.

Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
