Utah's Sakoda Selected as Lou Groza Finalist
Nov. 24, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah's Louie Sakoda has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2008 Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicker Award, presented annually to the top placekicker in the country. Sakoda, who hails from San Jose Calif., finished the 2008 regular season connecting on 21 of 23 field goals (91.3%), with his only two missed coming from 48 and 54 yards, respectively. The senior, who was successful on 57 consecutive PAT this year, currently leads all Football Bowl Subdivision kickers in scoring with 115 points. Sakoda ranks fifth nationally in field goal average (1.75) and 11th in points per game at any position (9.6). The 2007 All-American also has been named a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, which honors the student-athlete who best combines community service, academics and athletics.
Presented annually by the Fed-Ex Orange Bowl, the 2008 Groza Award recipient will be announced on Thurs., Dec. 11 at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards ceremony. The three finalists will be honored at the Lou Groza Awards Banquet at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on Tues., Dec. 9.
