MWC Weekly Football Awards Utah's Savoy, New Mexico's Fashola net honors
Nov. 22, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Steve Savoy (Utah) and Fola Fashola (New Mexico) were named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week. Savoy earns Offensive Player of the Week, while Fashola garnered Defensive honors. A Special Teams award was not selected. Savoy and Fashola are both first-time honorees.
MWC Offensive Player of the Week Savoy had three rushes for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown in Utah's 52-21 victory over BYU Saturday. He put the Utes up 7-0 with 52 seconds remaining in the first quarter after converting a fourth and goal with a two-yard touchdown run. In the third quarter, Savoy recorded the second-longest rush in school history with a 92-yard touchdown run that extended Utah's lead to 38-21. He concluded the night with a 20-yard touchdown reception at the 10:34 mark of the fourth quarter to put the Utes ahead, 45-21.
MWC Defensive Player of the Week Fashola recorded 10 tackles, including four solo stops, in New Mexico's 16-9 victory over Wyoming Saturday. His tackle total included a career-high 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as the Lobos limited the Cowboys to 33 net rushing yards on 40 attempts and three fields goals in the game.
