Air Force Keeps Its Focus Both On And Off The field The San Diego Union-Tribune Feature Story
Nov. 22, 2002
By Tom Shanahan SAN DIEGO - Hanging in the locker of every Air Force Academy football player is a scarf that represents an Air Force flying squadron stationed somewhere in the world. The squadrons adopt a player and expect him to communicate with their members. The players see the scarf as they dress for practice and one last time before taking the field for games. Air Force senior running back Don Clark always thought the Scarf Program was inspiring, and a good way for the players to keep football in perspective. Now he has a deeper appreciation. "They are guys who have come back to the academy from being in a leadership position in places like Afghanistan and the Middle East, and they talk about how when they're over there, they're so interested and into what we're doing on the football field," Clark said. "Some of the guys are former players and some aren't, but there is an instant bond between all of us."
