BYU Captures MWC Football Title Outright Wyoming Joins Cougars as fourth MWC bowl-eligible team
Nov. 19, 2006 The number of bowl-eligible teams in the Mountain West Conference climbed to four with Wyoming's 34-26 win over UNLV on Saturday. The Cowboys (6-6, 5-3) join TCU (8-2, 4-2) and Utah (7-4, 5-2) in their quest for a bowl berth, while BYU has already punched its ticket to the postseason, accepting an invitation to play in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl for the second straight year on Dec. 21. The Cougars rolled up 653 yards total offense and punted only once en route to their eighth straight win, a 42-17 triumph Saturday over New Mexico. With the victory, BYU capped off a perfect home record and locked up its first MWC title since 2001. In other MWC action on Saturday, Utah kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to claim a 17-14 win against Air Force, while Wyoming withstood a late UNLV rally to hang on for the 34-26 win over the Rebels. In Fort Worth, TCU scored on eight consecutive drives and held San Diego State to 87 yards total offense for a 52-0 shutout of the Aztecs.
