New Mexico's DonTrell Moore Selected As Semifinalist For 2005 Doak Walker Award Moore currently leads the MWC and ranks 14th in the NCAA averaging 115.5 yards per game.
Nov. 18, 2005 DALLAS, TEXAS - The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors announced today that senior tailback DonTrell Moore of New Mexico is one of 10 semifinalists for the 2005 Doak Walker Award. Moore is the New Mexico and Mountain West Conference career rushing leader with 4,830 yards, which ranks No. 2 among active NCAA rushers and 18th all-time. He became the sixth player in NCAA history to reach 1,000 yards rushing in four different seasons when he gained 117 yards against Colorado State on Oct. 28, joining Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh 1973-76), Amos Lawrence (North Carolina 1977-80), Denvis Manns (New Mexico State 1995-98), Ron Dayne (Wisconsin 1996-99) and Cedric Benson (Texas 2001-04). Moore currently leads the MWC and ranks 14th in the NCAA averaging 115.5 yards per game (1,115 total) in 2005. He is 170 yards away from becoming the 12th player in NCAA history to reach the 5,000 career yards milestone. The last MWC student-athlete to win the Doak Walker Award was BYU's Luke Staley in 2001. The 153 members of the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast their votes over the next week to determine the 2005 finalists. On Wednesday, November 23, three finalists will be named, and a second vote will determine the recipient. The recipient of the 2005 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 8. The award will be presented at the 2005 Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet in Dallas on Monday, February 27, 2006. Jim Swink, former TCU star running back, was named the recipient of the 2005 PricewaterhouseCoopers Doak Walker Legends Award and will also be honored at the banquet.
