Lobos in Position for Bowl New Mexico bids to be in Las Vegas game second straight year.
Nov. 18, 2003
By Mark Anderson LAS VEGAS - If form holds for the final two weeks of the season, New Mexico might be making its second straight appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl. By beating Air Force 24-12 on Saturday to move into sole possession of second place, the Lobos (7-4, 4-2) have joined first-place Utah (8-2, 5-1) as the Mountain West's leading postseason candidates. The Las Vegas Bowl, to be held Dec. 24 at Sam Boyd Stadium, features the No. 2 choice from the MWC and No. 5 selection from the Pacific-10. New Mexico played UCLA in last year's game. Though the Las Vegas Bowl committee hasn't met since last week, executive director Tina Kunzer-Murphy said New Mexico-Air Force "was going to be a very important game. Now we want to wait and see how Utah does." The Utes (8-2, 5-1) can clinch the outright MWC title Saturday if they win at Brigham Young (4-7, 3-3). That would send them to the Liberty Bowl. If Utah loses and New Mexico wins Saturday at Wyoming (4-6, 2-3), the Liberty Bowl would vote on which team to take. The Las Vegas Bowl has a conference call scheduled for Sunday morning.
