MWC Suspends UNLV Football Player UNLV defensive back Ruschard Dodd-Masters receives one-game suspension
Nov. 10, 2004 Colorado Springs, Colo. -- UNLV defensive back Ruschard Dodd-Masters has received a one-game suspension for a violation of the MWC Sportsmanship Policy. Dodd-Masters will miss the UNLV at Colorado State contest scheduled for this Saturday, November 13. The Sportsmanship Policy, which recently has been a point of increased emphasis by the Conference's presidents, faculty athletics representatives and athletics administrators, stipulates that conduct by athletes, coaches and other institutional athletics personnel who act in an unsportsmanlike manner is subject to sanction. The policy specifically identifies "striking or attempting to strike or otherwise physically abusing an official, coach, spectator or student-athlete" as a violation that is subject to penalty. At 6:07 of the third quarter in last Saturday's Wyoming at UNLV contest, Dodd-Masters threw a punch and struck a Wyoming player in the throat near the end of the play. This was a potentially dangerous non-football act that clearly fell under the definition of "physical abuse". A 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was assessed on the play. Also considered in this case was Dodd-Masters' half-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct in 2003. "This type of action has no place in sport and simply will not be tolerated in the Mountain West Conference," said Commissioner Craig Thompson. "The MWC will continue to aggressively enforce its Sportsmanship Policy in an effort to create a culture of spirited competition coupled with exemplary conduct." The Mountain West Conference will have no further comment regarding this case.
