MWC Weekly Gridiron Release Catch BYU at Notre Dame Saturday on NBC!

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - There are three conference games in the Mountain West this week, with all three having an impact on the conference title race and bowl berths. San Diego State travels to Colorado State in an ESPN+Plus regional telecast. New Mexico hosts Air Force and Wyoming heads to Utah. BYU steps out of conference, playing at Notre Dame in an NBC broadcast. UNLV is off. BOWLING Heading into the third-week of games in November, the Mountain West Conference is the only I-A league to have all its teams still in the running to post bowl eligible records. Two teams, BYU and San Diego State, needing to win all their remaining games, would be eliminated from bowl contention with losses this weekend. STANDINGS Utah (4-1) can claim its first outright MWC title by winning its final two games. The Utes need one victory to assure themselves of a share of the conference crown for the second time in league history (1999). Air Force and New Mexico (3-2) are one game back. Seven of the eight tems are still in contention for the league championship, with only UNLV eliminated from the title race. BOWL PICTURE The Mountain West has bowl arrangements to send three teams into the post season in 2003. Every team in the MWC is still in contention for a bowl berth. Following is a look at the conference's bowl picture:
PARITY Of the 20 conference games played in 2003, 12 have been decided by seven or less points, with Air Force scoring on the game's last play for a 14-point victory at BYU. To date, 63 of the 132 conference games played in the history of the Mountain West have been decided by eight points or less. In the five-year history of the MWC, the home team has gone 66-66 in conference games. BCS WINS With six wins vs. BCS conference teams, the MWC is tied for eighth among the 11 Divsion I-A conferences in non-conference wins against BCS opponents.
Big Ten, 15 OUT OF CONFERENCE Teams from the MWC have combined to post a 17-15 mark vs. non-conference Division I-A foes, which includes a 6-11 record against teams from BCS leagues. Eleven of the 17 games vs. BCS opponents have been played on the road, where the MWC has gone 3-8, while going 3-2 in its five home games and 0-1 at neutral sites. The MWC has gone 2-3 vs. non-conference opponents ranked in the Top 25. KIDS COLLEGE This season the MWC launches an education initiative utilizing the platform of college athletics to provide teachers with a relevant resource in teaching Kindergarten-8th grade students. This web-based learning program will be available in every public and private, elementary and middle school in the six-state MWC region, impacting more than 6.5 million students. Designed by Learning Through Sports, Inc., "Kid's College" captivates and motivates children using their favorite sports with Mountain West teams and mascots reinforcing skills taught in the classroom.
