Nov. 9, 2004

DALLAS, Texas - Utah senior defensive back Morgan Scalley, who earlier this week was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, is this week's recipient of the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week award. The award is selected by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

Scalley was honored for his outstanding effort in Utah's 63-31 victory over Colorado State last Saturday. The senior returned a fumble a school-record 88 yards for a touchdown and picked off two passes and accumulated 40 yards in returns on those plays. He also had five tackles (two unassisted) and a pass breakup for the unbeaten Utes.

Scalley is the third Mountain West Player to win the Bronko Nagurski National Player of the Week award this season. San Diego State's Matt McCoy was honored Sept. 18 and Wyoming's Derrick Martin earned the award Sept. 25.

For the fourth straight season, the All-America committee of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) has selected a weekly winner on behalf of the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Scalley is the final winner of the weekly award this season. The FWAA will name the Nagurski Trophy semifinalists on Monday, Nov. 15 and the 2004 trophy will be presented on Dec. 6 in Charlotte, N.C. by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
