Two MWC Football Players Named Finalists for Wuerffel Trophy Air Force's Travis Dekker and BYU's Matt Allen are recognized for their excellence in academics, athletics and community service
Nov. 7, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Selected for the college football player that stands out in the classroom, on the field, and in the community, two Mountain West Conference football players were named finalists for the 2007 Wuerffel Trophy.Among the semifinalists are Air Force's Travis Dekker and BYU's Matt Allen. Dekker, a junior tight end from Albuquerque, N.M., is third on the Falcons' roster in receiving with 18 catches for 257 yards and one touchdown. Dekker has been named to the superintendent's list for military, academic and athletic excellence four times. A member of the dean's list, he holds a 3.7 grade point average and is studying biochemistry. Allen, a senior wide receiver from Peoria, Ariz, is averaging 24.0 receiving yards per game this season, and has made 17 grabs for 192 yards and two touchdowns. In his four years at BYU, the recreation management graduate has made 66 receptions for 910 yards and seven total touchdowns. The winner of the 2007 Wuerffel Trophy will be announced on Dec. 4 as part of the College Football Awards show in Orlando, Fla. The recipient will also be honored at a banquet held on Feb. 13-15, 2008 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
