Ten MWC Football Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Honors
Nov. 5, 2009 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Ten Mountain West Conference football student-athletes have been named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selections, it was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Air Force WR Kevin Fogler, BYU LB Matthew Bauman, DL Brett Denney and DB Scott Johnson, TCU WR Bart Johnson, UNLV WR Ryan Wolfe and Utah OL Zane Beadles were all first-team honorees, while Wyoming OL Russ Arnold, LB Weston Johnson and TE Jesson Salyards received second-team accolades. As first-team all-district selections, Fogler, Bauman, Denney, Scott Johnson, Bart Johnson, Wolfe and Beadles advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Fogler, a Fort Wayne, Ind., product, is the Falcons' top receiver this season with 14 catches for 348 yards and four touchdowns. The junior wide receiver collected Academic all-MWC and MWC Scholar-Athlete honors last year and is carrying a 3.57 grade point average in management. Majoring in finance, Bauman has a 3.91 GPA and is making his second-straight appearance on the all-District first team after earning Academic All-American distinction in 2008. A senior linebacker and native of Salt Lake City, Bauman is a three-time Academic all-MWC selection and a two-time MWC Scholar-Athlete. He has already been named a 2009 National Scholar Athlete by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame and is a candidate for the William V. Campbell Trophy. Also majoring in finance, Denney is in his final semester as an undergraduate, sporting a 3.59 GPA. A native of Thornton, Colo., he has received Academic all-MWC and MWC Scholar-Athlete accolades each of the past three years. The senior defensive lineman has two sacks this season, along with a fumble recovery. Scott Johnson, a senior defensive back and exercise science major, receives his second straight first-team Academic all-District nod while carrying a 3.82 GPA. A three-time Academic all-MWC selection and two-time MWC Scholar-Athlete, the Southlake, Texas, product leads the team with three interceptions and is second with 42 tackles, including 31 solo stops.
Bart Johnson is second on the Horned Frogs with 22 receptions for 287 yards this season. The Brownwood, Texas, native is a two-time Academic all-MWC honoree majoring in marketing with a 3.77 grade point average. This is the junior wide receiver's second straight first-team Academic all-District honor. Wolfe, a wide receiver from Santa Clarita, Calif., leads the league and ranks 11th nationally with 7.33 receptions per game this season. Currently managing a 4.0 grade point average in graduate school, Wolfe is pursuing a master's in sports education leadership after already earning his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from UNLV with a cumulative 3.55 GPA. He has captured Academic all-MWC accolades each of the past three years and MWC Scholar-Athlete distinction once. Beadles was also a first-team Academic all-District pick last season. The two-time all-MWC honoree is a candidate for the 2009 Outland Trophy, as well as one of 10 finalists for the 2009 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Hailing from Sandy, Utah, the senior offensive lineman has 14 cuts and eight pancake blocks this season, along with a team-best 87% overall grade. A mechanical engineering major, Beadles holds a 3.54 GPA and is scheduled to graduate in December. He has earned Academic all-MWC distinction once, along with one MWC Scholar-Athlete award. Arnold, a senior from Westminster, Colo., has achieved a 3.31 cumulative grade-point average in business administration. A three-time Academic all-MWC honoree, he was elected a team captain this season and is the Cowboys' starting offensive center. Weston Johnson, a senior linebacker from Wray, Colo., is carrying a 3.44 GPA win marketing with a minor in finance. He has earned Academic all-MWC kudos each of the last three years, as well as one MWC Scholar-Athlete award. He is a starting outside linebacker and team captain for the Cowboys. Salyards, a Haxtun, Colo., native, has built a 3.47 GPA in mechanical engineering. The senior has started 18 of 43 career games at tight end for the Cowboys. He is a three-time Academic all-MWC recipient and two-time MWC Scholar-Athlete honoree. Nominations and voting for the Academic All-America® programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the current institution, reached sophomore athletic eligibility, be a starter or important reserve and maintained a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale). |
