Colorado State Rallies Over New Mexico, 17-14 Cecil Sapp punched in a 3-yard touchdown to help the Rams drop conference leader New Mexico.
Oct. 7, 2000
By JOHN MOSSMAN FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Matt Newton completed 7 of 7 passes on a long fourth-quarter scoring drive that culminated in Cecil Sapp's 3-yard run, and Colorado State rallied to edge New Mexico 17-14 on Saturday. Colorado State (4-1), opening its Mountain West campaign by knocking off the conference leader, trailed 14-10 when Newton went to work early in the final period. Shrugging off interceptions that had ended the Rams' two previous possessions, Newton passed 16 yards to Pete Rebstock, then hit Will Layne on a 29-yarder on second-and-21. A pass-interference penalty on New Mexico's Walter Bernard in the end zone put Colorado State at the 2, and two plays later Sapp ran 3 yards off the right side with 6:23 left, capping an 84-yard, 13-play drive. New Mexico (3-4, 1-1) had two subsequent possessions, but the first fizzled on back-to-back false-start penalties, and the second died near midfield when Rudy Caamano's fourth-down pass sailed out of bounds. The Lobos had won three straight. The defense-dominated game saw Colorado State sack Caamano six times and New Mexico sack Newton five times. Trailing 10-7 at halftime, the Lobos marched 62 yards on the opening series of the second half to take a 14-10 lead. Caamano passed 19 yards to Kirk Robbins, and fullback Ted Iacenda took a lateral and threw a 39-yard pass to Rob Caston to the CSU 4. Two plays later, Javier Hanson dived 2 yards for the TD. Colorado State's next series ended when linebacker David Mauer intercepted Newton and returned 7 yards to the CSU 40. The Lobos reached the 13, but Caamano was sacked for a 9-yard loss, and Vladimir Borombozin's 41-yard field goal was blocked by Rhett Nelson. Newton's 44-yard pass to Rebstock and Frank Rice's 23-yard run on a reverse moved the Rams to the UNM 2, but on the first play of the final quarter Bernard made a diving interception in the end zone. Newton put the Rams ahead 7-0 on a 19-yard scoring pass to Rebstock midway through the opening quarter. Caamano's 25-yard pass to Iacenda tied it early in the second quarter. Rams linebacker David Vickers sacked Caamano, forced a fumble and recovered
at the New Mexico 32 late in the half, and C.W. Hurst kicked a 21-yard field
goal for a 10-7 halftime advantage.
