PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (SEPT. 21, 2009)

Offensive Player of the Week
OMAR CLAYTON, UNLV
Junior, Quarterback, Normal, Illinois/Normal Community HS

Omar Clayton threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score to lead UNLV to a 34-33 victory over previously-unbeaten Hawai`i. The junior quarterback set career-highs in passing yards (340) and completions (28) while also adding 19 yards on the ground. Clayton was nearly unstoppable in the second half, hitting 19-of-26 passes for 221 yards following intermission. The Normal, Illinois, native found Phillip Payne for an eight-yard score to give his team a 21-20 lead as the third quarter ended. When Hawai`i responded with a go-ahead TD, Clayton answered by leading the Rebels on a 75-yard scoring drive, taking the ball into the end zone himself from 11 yards out. After the Warriors re-took the lead, Clayton once again led his team back down the field, engineering a 14-play, 67-yard drive that put UNLV back on top with 36 seconds left in the game. Facing third and goal from the 15-yard line, Clayton again connected with Payne for what would be the game-winning touchdown.

Defensive Player of the Week
ANDRE MORRIS, JR., AIR FORCE
Junior, Linebacker, Newnan, Georgia/Northgate HS

Andre Morris recorded seven total tackles, including four solo stops and a career-high two sacks for a total loss of 11 yards in Air Force's 37-13 MWC season-opening win at New Mexico. Three of the junior linebacker's seven tackles, including one of the sacks, came on third down, forcing the Lobos to punt. The Newnan, Ga., native's two sacks are the most by a Falcon this season in a single game.

Special Teams Players of the Week
PETE KONTODIAKOS, COLORADO STATE
Freshman, Punter, Tarpon Springs, Florida/Countryside HS

In just his third collegiate game, Pete Kontodiakos averaged 47.2 yards on six punts in Colorado State's 35-20 win over Nevada. Two of the freshman's punts landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. He also recorded a season-long kick of 76 yards in the second quarter. A native of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Kontodiakos also had kicks of 67 yards and 52 yards. His punts of 76 and 67 yards are the longest recorded by any punter in the MWC this season.

TWO MWC TEAMS RANKED IN TOP 25 POLLS
Two Mountain West teams are currently ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches' Top-25 polls. This is the first time in 14 weeks the MWC has not had three teams ranked. TCU is the MWC's highest-ranked team at No. 14 in the Coaches' poll and 15th in the AP poll. BYU dropped to 19th in the AP poll and 20th in the Coaches' poll. BYU has appeared in the polls for 24 consecutive weeks, followed by TCU at 14 straight weeks. Utah and Colorado State are receiving votes in both polls. The Utes dropped out of this week's polls for the first time in 20 weeks (August 31, 2008).

NATION'S LONGEST ACTIVE WIN STREAK COMES TO AN END
Utah's 31-24 loss at Oregon ended the nation's longest active win streak at 16 games. The Utes also saw a nine-game road/neutral site win streak come to an end.

COACH TO CURE MD SPONSORED BY THE AFCA

Fans can support their favorite coaches in the fight against DMD by either contributing via text messaging (text the word CURE to 90999 and donate $5 ) or online at www.CoachtoCureMD.org.

UNLV'S WOLFE & BYU'S PITTA ARE NCAA'S ACTIVE CAREER RECEIVING YARDS LEADERS
UNLV senior WR Ryan Wolfe is currently the active career receiving yards leader with 3,023 yards. He leads Bryan Anderson of Central Michigan by 12 yards (3,011) and Naaman Roosevelt of Buffalo by 101 yards (2,922). BYU senior TE Dennis Pitta is eighth on the list, but leads all tight ends with 2,269 career receiving yards. Marshall TE Cody Slate trails Pitta by 101 yards with 2,168 career yards.

THE MWC IN WEEK 2

  • Utah and BYU both lost last Saturday, marking the first time both teams have lost on the same day since Sept. 8, 2007.
  • Utah held Oregon to 95 yards passing, marking the first time a Ute defense has kept its opponent under 100 yards passing since limiting Wyoming to 68 yards in the air on Oct. 11, 2008.
  • Of the 33 touchdowns scored by MWC teams last week, 17 came on the ground in the form of rushing TDs.
  • MWC teams averaged 207.2 yards passing in Week 3 games, and 158.8 yards rushing.
  • The TCU defense allowed only 30 rushing yards to Texas State, marking the third consecutive game the Horned Frogs have held its opponents under 100 yards on the ground. TCU limited Virginia to 57 rushing yards last week, and gave up only 28 rushing yards to Boise State in last year's 17-16 Poinsettia Bowl victory.
  • UNLV gave up 28 yards rushing to Hawai`i in the win last Saturday, marking the Rebels' first game limiting an opponent to under 100 yards on the ground since the 2008 season finale at San Diego State. In that contest, UNLV allowed 92 Aztec rushing yards.
