WEEKLY HONORS
Nate Scott (Wyoming), Rick Crowell (Colorado State) and Holmon Wiggins (New Mexico) were named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week for their performances on the football field last weekend. Wiggins is named Player of the Week for the second time this season, while Scott and Crowell are recognized for the first time in their careers.

Nate Scott, Wyoming, RB, Junior (MWC Offensive Player of the Week) The fleet footed running of Nate Scott led Wyoming to a 31-10 victory over Central Michigan. The Weed, Calif., native¹s two touchdown runs included a Mountain West Conference and Wyoming school record 95-yard gallop. In compiling the highest rushing output by a Cowboy in six years, Scott averaged 9.6 yards per carry and accounted for 192 of Wyoming¹s 311 rushing yards.

Rick Crowell, Colorado State, LB, Senior (MWC Defensive Player of the Week) Crowell turned in a career performance with a 19-tackle, 16 solo stop, effort in Colorado State¹s 13-10 defeat at Arizona State. Crowell made his presence felt behind the line of scrimmage with a sack and tackle for loss, for minus 26 yards. In two starts this season the Chula Vista, Calif., native has tallied 30 tackles.

Holmon Wiggins, New Mexico, PR, Junior (MWC Special Teams Player of the Week) Wiggins earns Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season, having been named Offensive Player of the Week following the season-opener. Wiggins set-up the Lobos game-winning touchdown in a 16-13 triumph over New Mexico State with a 77-yard, fourth-quarter punt return to the Aggie 1-yardline. The return was the second longest in Mountain West Conference history and ranks fourth on the UNM all-time list.

LAST WEEK
Three Mountain West Conference teams captured their first wins of the 2000 season this past Saturday. UNLV used a 31-point second quarter, the most points in a single quarter in Rebel football history, to secure a 38-0 shutout of North Texas in its 2000 home opener. Sophomore QB Jason Thomas scored three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) for the second straight game. Wyoming used a strong rushing performance from junior RB Nate Scott to defeat Central Michigan, 31-10, in its 2000 home opener. Scott rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 20 attempts, including a 95-yard score which is a new Mtn. West single game record for longest rushing play from scrimmage. New Mexico also captured its first win of the season with a 16-13 win at in-state rival New Mexico State. Junior tailback Holmon Wiggins had a 77-yard punt return late in the fourth quarter that help set up a Jared Baxter 1-yard TD plunge for the win. Colorado State suffered its first setback of the year at Arizona State, 13-10. The Sun Devils sealed the upset with a 41-yard field goal with four seconds remaining in the game for the victory. Utah lost its third straight game to a Pac-10 opponent, 38-21, at home to Washington State. Junior WR Cliff Russell recorded his second 100-yard-plus receiving game of the year (131 yards). Last Thursday, BYU fell to Mississippi State, 44-28, in Provo. Senior WR Jonathan Pittman recorded his third two touchdown receiving game of his career with 39 and 19-yard scores.

The Cougars are 0-1 in Mtn. West play, while the Rebels enter their first league game of the season.

MWC BOWL TIE-INS

The game will be aired on ESPN starting at 1:30 P.M. (ET) vs. the champion of Conference USA. Edwards, who will be 70 in October, has compiled a 252-97-3 overall record in 28-plus seasons with the Cougars. His teams have won 20 conference titles and have appeared in 22 bowl games.
