Offensive Player of the Week
MAX HALL, BYU
Senior, Quarterback, Mesa, Arizona/Arizona State

Max Hall completed 26-of-38 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 24 BYU to a 14- 13 upset of No. 3 Oklahoma. Down 13-7 with 11:41 left to play, Hall led the Cougars on a 16-play, 78-yard drive that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown pass to McKay Jacobson to tie the game with just 3:03 remaining. Mitch Payne's extra point put BYU on top, 14-13. During what proved to be the gamewinning drive, Hall completed 9-of-11 passes for 74 yards, including a 23-yard strike to tight end Dennis Pitta on 4th-and-4 from the Oklahoma 29-yard line. The victory marked the first time BYU defeated a top-10 team since downing No. 1 Miami, 28-21, on Sept. 8, 1990.

Defensive Player of the Week
ANDREW RICH, BYU
Junior, Free Safety, Ogden, Utah/Snow College

Andrew Rich recorded five tackles, including four solo stops, one tackle for loss and two forced fumbles to aid the Cougars' upset victory. With Oklahoma holding a 7-0 lead at the 2:15 mark of the first quarter and a 1st-and-10 opportunity on the BYU 16-yardline, Rich caused a Sooner fumble that was recovered by Cougar linebacker Shawn Doman on the BYU 5-yard line. The Odgen, Utah, native forced his second fumble of the game with 4:12 left to play in the second quarter and Oklahoma driving. Cougar defensive lineman Brett Denney recovered the ball on the BYU 37. Five plays later, Max Hall connected with Andrew George on a 5-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7.

Special Teams Players of the Week
AUSTIN McCOY, WYOMING
Sophomore, Place Kicker/Punter, Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven HS

In his first start after adding placekicking duties to his role as punter, Austin McCoy accounted for 11 of Wyoming's 29 points in the 29-22 win vs. Weber State. The sophomore converted all three field goal attempts (22, 25 and 25 yards) and two-of-three PAT. In his more familiar role as the Cowboys' starting punter, the Winter Haven, Fla., native also averaged 44.2 yards on six punts, placing three inside the WSU 20.

TOSTITOS FIESTA BOWL NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK BY THE FWAA
#24/20 BYU's 14-13 win over #3 Oklahoma in Arlington, Texas, earned the Cougars the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week for games of the weekend of Sept. 5. The victory over the Sooners marked the highest-ranked opponent an MWC team has defeated since its inception in 1999. The previous best win against a highly-ranked team was Utah's victory over 4th-ranked Alabama (31-17) in the 2009 Allstate Sugar bowl. In a regular-season match-up, TCU defeated Oklahoma (#5 in USA Today and #7 in AP poll), 17-10, in Norman, Okla., in 2005.

The last time BYU beat a non-conference opponent ranked in the Top 10 was on Sept. 8, 1990, when the Cougars defeated No. 1 Miami, 28-21. The win also mark the first BYU victory over a ranked nonconference team since it defeated No. 14 Arizona State, 26-6, on Sept. 12, 1998. The win against Oklahoma snapped a 12-game losing streak to ranked non-conference opponents.

BCS STANDINGS
The Mountain West was one of three conferences to win at least two games against automatic-qualifying BCS conferences in Week 1. The MWC was 2-2, while the Big 12 was 3-0 and the SEC was 3-1. The MWC was also 2-1 against the Big 12 last weekend.

THREE MWC TEAMS RANKED IN TOP 25 POLLS
Three Mountain West teams are currently ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches' Top- 25 polls. BYU is the MWC's highest-ranked team at No. 9 in the AP poll and 12th in the Coaches' poll. TCU is 16th and Utah is No. 17 in both polls. BYU has appeared in the polls for 22 weeks in a row, followed by Utah at 18 straight and TCU in 12 consecutive weeks. The MWC has had at three teams ranked in the top 25 polls for 12 consecutive weeks.

THE MWC IN WEEK 1

  • MWC teams scored 28 touchdowns in Week 1 (18 rushing, nine passing and one fumble recovery), while holding opponents to 17 touchdowns (eight passing, eight rushing and one fumble recovery).
  • MWC teams outscored their opponents 231-146 in the opening weekend. The 231 combined points is the most by the MWC in an opening weekend since 2003, when MWC teams scored 288 total points. The combined margin of victory (+85) is also the most for the league since 2003, when MWC teams outscored their opponents by 168 total points.
  • Half of the MWC teams in action last week gained at least 400 total yards on offense. Air Force led all MWC teams with 576 total yards, followed by Utah with 519, UNLV with 466 and Wyoming with 434.
  • MWC defenses were on the attack in Week 1, as four league teams limited their opponents under 150 yards passing. Air Force gave up 61 passing yards to Nicholls State, while UNLV allowed 99 yards to Sacramento State. Utah limited Utah State to 121 yards passing, while BYU held Oklahoma to 147 yards in the air.
  • Three MWC teams also held their opponents to under 100 yards of total rushing in the first weekend of action. Colorado State limited Colorado to 29 yards on the ground, Wyoming held Weber State to 89 yards, and Air Force gave up just 90 yards rushing to Nicholls State.

GREAT DEBUT
True freshman strong safety Shamiel Gary tied a Wyoming school record with three interceptions in the 29-22 win over Weber State. The only other two Cowboys to pick off three passes in a single game were Selmer Pederson, who intercepted three versus Denver back in 1950 and Brian Lee, who accomplished the feat twice. Lee intercepted three passes versus SMU in 1996 and versus Montana in 1997. Gary also matched an MWC record with the three interceptions against Weber State. He is the only freshman to achieve the feat and the first MWC player to do it since New Mexico's Gabriel Fulbright grabbed three INTs against San Diego State on Oct. 18, 2003.

TWO MWC TEAMS OPEN NEW STADIUMS IN 2009
Air Force and BYU will both open new stadiums in 2009. The Cougars faced Oklahoma in the first college game to be played in the new Dallas Cowboys' stadium in Arlington, Texas. Then-No. 24/20 BYU upset then-No. 3/3 Oklahoma, 14-13. On September 12, Air Force will face Minnesota in the Gophers' 2009 season opener. The game will be played in the new TCF Bank Stadium.
