MWC Football Week 2 Preview

Five of seven games to be televised, including four national broadcasts

MWC Football Schedule

For the second consecutive week, all nine Mountain West Conference teams will be in action with two MWC and five non-conference contests scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6. Five of the seven contests will be televised, including national broadcasts on NBC, CBS C, VERSUS and The Mtn. In Conference play, Air Force travels to Wyoming (1:30 p.m. MT, CBS C), while UNLV visits #22/23 Utah (6 p.m. MT, The Mtn.). On the non-conference side of the schedule, #15 BYU plays at Washington (12 p.m. PT, FSN), Colorado State hosts Sacramento State (1:30 p.m. MT), San Diego State heads to Notre Dame (3:30 p.m. ET, NBC), New Mexico entertains Texas A&M (3 p.m. MT, VERSUS) and TCU welcomes Stephen F. Austin (6 p.m. CT).

Last week marked the DIRECTV debut of the MountainWest Sports Network - The Mtn., which launched on Wednesday, Aug. 27. The Mtn. is available on channel 616 on DIRECTV CHOICE and above packages for the states servicing MWC institutions (Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and the designated market areas of Dallas/Fort Worth and San Diego). Customers throughout the remainder of the country will be able to access The Mtn. with a subscription to DIRECTV's Sportspack. The Mtn. will broadcast 30 live regular-season football games this season, including six triple-header Saturdays.

BYU takes its nation-leading 11-game win streak on the road this week. The 15th-ranked Cougars are coming off a season-opening win over Northern Iowa, while the Huskies fell to Oregon in their season opener. Washington leads the overall series between the schools by a 4-2 margin, despite BYU winning the last meeting, 35-28 in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 9, 1999. The Cougars have never defeated the Huskies in Seattle.

Fresh on the heels of season-opening wins against Southern Utah and Ohio, respectively, Air Force and Wyoming square off in the MWC opener for both teams. The Falcons and Cowboys will be meeting for the 47th time in a series that dates back to Nov. 2, 1957. Neither program has won more than three consecutive games in the series. Last season, the Falcons rallied for a 20-12 home win over the Cowboys. Saturday's contest will mark Wyoming's 1,000th football game in Laramie.
 
Sacramento State at Colorado State

Colorado State and Football Championship Subdivision member Sacramento State will be facing each other for the first time. The Rams are coming off a season-opening loss to Colorado, while the Hornets kicked off the 2008 campaign with a win over Humboldt State.
 
San Diego State at Notre Dame

San Diego State and Notre Dame will meet for the first time in school history. The Aztecs are coming off a season-opening loss to Cal Poly, while the Fighting Irish take the field for the first time in 2008 after compiling a 3-9 record last season.
 
Texas A&M at New Mexico

Texas A&M won the only other meeting between the two programs, 63-0, back in 1926. Saturday's contest marks the Aggies' first trip to Albuquerque. New Mexico and Texas A&M each enter the game in search of their first wins of the 2008 campaign after falling to TCU and Arkansas State, respectively, in their season-openers last week.
 
Stephen F. Austin at TCU

TCU enters its first meeting with Stephen F. Austin riding a four-game win streak that dates back to last season. The Horned Frogs are coming off a season- and MWC-opening win over New Mexico, while the Lumberjacks' season-opening win over Langston snapped an 11-game losing skid.
 
UNLV at No. 22/23 Utah*

UNLV and No. 22/23 Utah are squaring off against each other in their respective MWC openers for the second straight season. Last year's meeting resulted in a 27-0 Rebel win in Las Vegas, but the Utes own a 6-0 record at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Utah has won 11 of the last 12 meetings in the series. The Utes are coming off a season-opening win at then-No. 24 Michigan, while the Rebels ended an eight-game losing streak by winning their season opener against Utah State.
