Utah's Ron McBride Signs New Four-Year Contract

New pact will keep McBride at Utah through the 2003 season.

Aug. 14, 2000

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah and Head Football Coach Ron McBride have reached an agreement that will keep McBride at the U. for the next four seasons. The new contract, signed by McBride Friday morning, replaces a previous one that had two years remaining on it.

"Little does the University know, but I'd work here for free," said McBride, who is preparing for his 11th year on the Hill. "I'm extremely pleased with the way the contract is written, what it contains and the years. It gives me some security and also provides me some additional incentives. I told my lawyer to have this thing settled by today (Friday)-that this was my deadline. I haven't liked having this thing hanging over my head."

The new pact runs through January 1, 2004 and features an annual total compensation package of $310,000. It also provides incentive clauses relating to academics and team performance. The total package includes a guaranteed base salary of $150,000, plus radio and television money and deferred compensation.

"We're pleased to reach an agreement with Mac on a contract that reflects his accomplishments at the University of Utah," said Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill. "We both think it's a good contract. I'm excited for Coach McBride and for the University of Utah and we're all looking forward to having some fun and playing football."

McBride is 71-46 in 10 years at the U. He has won a share of two conference titles, including the inaugural Mountain West Conference crown last year. McBride has taken Utah to five bowl games. Utah finished with a 9-3 record last year and won the Las Vegas Bowl. The Utes were the preseason pick by both the media and coaches at the recent MWC Football Preview to defend their conference championship this fall.
