Aug. 1, 2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Two-time defending Mountain West Conference football champion BYU will enter the upcoming campaign ranked among the nation's Top 25 after garnering a No. 17 spot in the USA Today Coaches' Preseason Poll with 547 points. Utah and TCU also received votes in the poll and are listed at No. 28 and No. 44, respectively.
Led by 2007 first-team all-MWC honorees Max Hall (QB), Dennis Pitta (TE), Ray Feinga (OL) and Dallas Reynolds (OL), the Cougars return 10 starters from an offensive unit that ranked among the top 25 nationally in passing and total offense a year ago. Three starters also return on defense for BYU, which ranked among the top 10 nationally in scoring, rushing and total defense. BYU, which enters the 2008 season with the nation's longest win streak at 10 games, compiled an 8-0 mark against league opponents last year in route to an 11-2 overall record. The Cougars finished the 2007 season with Top 20 rankings in the final USA Today Coaches (t-14), Associated Press (14) and Harris (18) polls.
Utah, who finished 2007 with a 9-4 record (5-3 MWC) and a win over Navy in San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, received 60 points in the preseason poll. TCU also received votes (5) by the coaches and look to build on its 8-5 mark (4-4 MWC) in 2007.
The 2008 Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll is scheduled to be released August 16.
