COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

BYU junior quarterback Max Hall ranks among the individuals competing for the coveted 2008 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the nation's best quarterback in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Candidates for the O'Brien Award, which focuses on accomplishments both on and off the field, were named to the watch list for their quarterback skills and athletic ability, academics, reputation as a team player, character, leadership and sportsmanship.

In 2007, Hall led the league with 3,848 passing yards in 13 games and became the MWC's all-time leading sophomore quarterback in that category. The Mesa, Ariz. native compiled a league-best five 300-yard games on the season, including contests against UCLA (391), Tulsa (537), Colorado State (355), TCU (305) and Wyoming (331). Hall led the MWC with an average 297.1 yards of total offense per game and completed a league-high 26 touchdown passes on his way to first team all-MWC honors.

Three former BYU quarterbacks have received the O'Brien Trophy. Ty Detmer was honored as the nation's best quarterback for the 1991 and 1992 seasons, while Jim McMahon and Steve Young earned the 1981 and 1983 awards, respectively.

The 2008 O'Brien Award will be announced on Dec. 11 at the ESPNU Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla. The recipient will be honored on Feb. 16, 2009 at the 32nd Annual O'Brien Awards Dinner at the Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
