Record Breaking Numbers Highlight Camps 19 teams attend Team Camp during the Mike Sanford Football Camps.
June 18, 2007 LAS VEGAS - No less than 700 players that made up 19 teams took part in the Team Camp on the UNLV campus this past week as part of the Mike Sanford Football Camps, which are running throughout June. Teams from Las Vegas, California, Arizona and America Samoa, as well as individuals from Hawaii, converged on Rebel Park, and it was the biggest turnout in camp history. "It was the most teams we have ever had for the team camp and it has grown by 20 percent since we started," said UNLV head coach Mike Sanford. "There was a lot of good teaching going on and I think it was a tremendously positive experience for everyone involved." Also this past weekend was the Big Man Camp, which featured 85 linemen that went through drills and instruction on Saturday from 4-8:30 p.m. at Rebel Park and the Lied Athletics Complex, in conjunction with the 16-team Passing Tournament. The Big Man Camp was a new addition last year, and second-year UNLV assistant Gary Bernardi, who oversees the program's offensive tackles and tight ends, said the second installment of the camp was a rousing success. "The Big Man Camp was something we added last year and it has become a popular addition to our camps," Bernardi said. "It is a great opportunity to teach and work with a large amount of quality linemen from across the West and something we expect to continue to grow and get better each year." The Mike Sanford Football Camps continue this week with a youth camp through June 22.
