COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Three Mountain West Conference football players are among the candidates for the 2009 Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's top center. Tim Walter (Colorado State), Eric Cook (New Mexico) and Trask Iosefa (San Diego State) were named to the 2009 spring watch list, which currently is comprised of 44 college football players.
Walter, a 6-foot-6, 290-pound senior out of Manhattan Beach, Calif., was an all-conference performer for Colorado State in 2008. He will anchor a veteran offensive line that will feature four senior starters. The Rams' roster leads the nation with 125 combined career starts on the offensive line. With 27 career starts at center, including all 13 games last season, Walter will play a key role in for Colorado State in 2009 as the team breaks in new starters at both quarterback and running back.
Cook was a second-team all-conference selection in 2008. The 6-6, 315-pound senior from Albuquerque, N.M., was the leader of an offensive line that paved the way for the nation's 16th-ranked rushing attack.
Iosefa has started in 24 consecutive games for San Diego State over the past two seasons. The 6-0, 315-pound junior from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, came to San Diego State in the spring of 2006, before redshirting later that season.
The process
While more than a dozen All-America football teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee uses these four prestigious teams to determine a winner:
- American Football Coaches Association
- Walter Camp Foundation
- Sporting News
- Football Writers Association of America
Because the selectors of these four All-America teams can place centers in a mix of offensive linemen that includes guards and tackles, their 11-man first teams can often have two centers. The Rimington Committee's policy is to count all players that play primarily the center position for their respective teams as centers, even though they may be listed as guards or tackles on the four All-America teams.
The winner will be honored at the Rimington Trophy presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Neb., in January.
About the award
The 10-year-old trophy is presented by the Boomer Esiason Foundation. Past recipients include Nebraska 's Dominic Raiola, Ohio State's LeCharles Bentley, Miami's Brett Romberg, Virginia Tech's Jake Grove, Michigan's David Baas, LSU's Ben Wilkerson, Minnesota's Greg Eslinger, West Virginia's Dan Mozes, Arkansas' Jonathan Luigs and, last season, Penn State's A.Q. Shipley.
Since its inception in 2000, the Rimington Trophy has raised more than $1.3 million for the award's benefactor, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is hosted by the Boomer Esiason Foundation that to date has raised better than $73 million for CF research.
Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at Nebraska in 1981 and 1982. He also became the Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.
The Rimington Trophy is a fully accredited member of the National College Football Awards Association.
