Aztecs Chuck Long, Marshall Faulk Finish Second In Charity Golf Event
Pair fall by one stroke at the 2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater
May 2, 2007 GREENSBORO, Ga. - Just two days after the conclusion of spring practice, San Diego State head football coach Chuck Long paired with former Aztec standout Marshall Faulk to finish second in the inaugural Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater golf tournament Tuesday at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga. Long and Faulk were edged by one stroke by the Virginia Tech team of head football coach Frank Beamer and former NBA standout Dell Curry. Long and Faulk finished at 9-under par and were one 35-foot birdie putt away from forcing a playoff on the 18th hole. Beamer and Curry earned $100,000 with the win, which will be donated to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund to aid families of the April 16 massacre at Virginia Tech. Other participants in the 12-team field included Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Doug Drabek (Houston), CBS sports analyst Billy Packer (Wake Forest), South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier and NFL great Eric Dickerson (SMU). Former Aztec head football coach Ted Tollner also paired with San Diego native and NFL Hall of Famer Marcus Allen to represent USC. The Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater is a golf event featuring NCAA head coaches and celebrity alumni from the same schools competing for $275,000 in scholarship funds. The event was taped by CBS and will be nationally broadcast as a two-hour special on Christmas Day from 2-4 p.m. Final team standings:
