Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl To Be Played On Monday Night, Dec. 24
April 20, 2012
HONOLULU - ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN, announced that for the first time in the bowl's history, the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl will be played on Monday Night, Dec. 24 at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is 3 p.m. HT (8 p.m. ET) and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
Now in its 11th year, the bowl will pit a team from the Mountain West Conference against a team from Conference USA. The game will be played on Christmas Eve for the eighth time.
"The Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl will be broadcast on ESPN on Christmas Eve on an unopposed prime time slot," said David Matlin, Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl Executive Director. "While folks are enjoying their Christmas Eve in frigid winter conditions, they can tune in to watch Monday night football in paradise."
Last year's Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl featured Nevada of the Western Athletic Conference and Southern Miss of Conference USA. The Golden Eagles earned a school-record 12th victory by defeating the Wolf Pack, 24-17.
Earlier this year, ERT announced a two-year partnership with the Mountain West. Previously, a WAC team had participated in all 10 bowls. C-USA teams have appeared in eight bowls and boast a 5-3 record.
The Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl has been known for its high-scoring (the winning team has scored 40 or more points eight times), thrilling offenses, and close games (two overtime games and five games decided by one touchdown or less).
The Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl has supported many non-profit organizations through the Hawai`i Bowl Foundation. Over $100,000 was granted by the Hawai`i Bowl Foundation in 2011. A total of $600,000 and $1.75 million in tickets have been donated to military and charities during the bowl's history.
The game was created in 2002 after the hometown University of Hawai`i finished the 2001 season with a 9-3 record and was not invited to a bowl game. The Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl continues to offer UH a bowl opportunity when bowl eligible. The Warriors have participated in the bowl six times.
Tickets to the 2012 Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl are expected to go on sale this summer. For more information, visit the official Web site: SheratonHawaiiBowl.com.
