Cowboys Start Season with Win Against Utah State, 38-7 Hoost Marsh scores two touchdowns to lead Wyoming.
Sept. 2, 2006
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Hoost Marsh scored two touchdowns in leading Wyoming to a 38-7 win over Utah State on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for Wyoming from the second half of last season. After three quarters, Wyoming led just 17-7. But three big plays in the fourth quarter put the Cowboys well out of reach as the Aggies had trouble rallying either their offense or defense. Tyler Holden caught a pass from Jacob Doss and shrugged off an Aggies defender on his way to a 51-yard touchdown and a 24-7 Wyoming lead. Less than a minute later, the Cowboys scored again. Michael Medina intercepted a pass by Leon Jackson III and ran in 16 yards, putting the Cowboys up 31-7. And Wyoming scored again after Utah State's next drive broke down quickly. Just two plays put the Cowboys back on the Aggies' 2-yard line, and Marsh ran in on the third. The Cowboys took a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter, when Doss connected with Wynel Seldon and Seldon jogged in for a 13-yard touchdown. Utah State's only score came on defense when Antonio Taylor intercepted a pass intended for Marsh and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, bringing the Aggies within 10-7 going into halftime. Wyoming took a 3-0 lead on its first possession with a 33-yard field goal by Aric Goodman. Marsh caught a pass and ran in for a 39-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter to make it 10-0.
