For the fifth consecutive year, the Mountain West will send five teams into postseason bowl games in 2011. The Mountain West has earned 51 bowl bids since 1999 and holds a 29-17 all-time record in those contests, including an 11-3 mark against BCS automatic-qualifying conferences since 2004. The Mountain West finished with a 4-1 (.800) mark in postseason play last year and claimed the Bowl Challenge Cup, becoming the only conference to win the trophy four times since the award's inception in 2002-03.
No. 7 Boise State (11-1, 6-1) will take part in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas and will play Pac-12 Conference opponent Arizona State (6-6, 4-5). The Broncos and Sun Devils have met just once on the gridiron, with Arizona State capturing a 56-7 victory in Tempe, Ariz., on Oct. 5, 1996. Boise State will be making its second consecutive appearance in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, after notching a 26-3 victory over Utah in 2010. The Broncos are making their ninth-straight bowl trip and 12th appearance overall. Boise State boasts an all-time record of 7-4 in bowl games and currently owns a two-game win streak in postseason contests. The 20th annual MAACO Bowl Las Vegas will take place at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas on Thursday, Dec. 22. ESPN will broadcast the game beginning at 5 p.m. PT.
2011 Mountain West champion and 18th-ranked TCU (10-2, 7-0) will make its seventh consecutive bowl appearance and 13th in the last 14 years (27th overall) when it faces Louisiana Tech (8-4, 6-1) out of the Western Athletic Conference in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 5 p.m. PT on ESPN. This will be the first meeting between TCU and Louisiana Tech. The Horned Frogs, who claimed their third-straight MW championship this season, are 2-0 all-time in the Poinsettia Bowl. TCU defeated Boise State, 17-10, in the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl and tallied a 37-7 victory over Northern Illinois in 2006.
San Diego State (8-4, 4-3), who is making its seventh overall bowl appearance, will be the Mountain West's representative in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. The Aztecs will face Louisiana (8-4, 6-2) out of the Sun Belt Conference. San Diego State and the Ragin' Cajuns have never met on the football field. The Aztecs are participating in back-to-back bowl games for the first time in the program's Division I history. Last season, the Aztecs knocked off Navy, 35-14 in the Poinsettia Bowl to earn their first bowl victory since defeating Boston University, 28-7, in the Pasadena Bowl on Dec. 6, 1969. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La., on Saturday, Dec. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on ESPN.
Air Force (7-5, 3-4) has accepted a bid to the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman and will play Toledo (8-4, 7-1) out of the Mid-American Conference. This marks the Falcons' program-record fifth-straight and 22nd bowl appearance overall. Air Force, which is coming off back-to-back bowl wins over Houston (2009 Armed Forces Bowl) and Georgia Tech (2010 Independence Bowl), will be making its first-ever appearance in the Military Bowl. It will also be the Falcons' first meeting on the gridiron with the Rockets. The Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman takes place on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., and will air at 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Wyoming (8-4, 5-2) will be the league's representative in the New Mexico Bowl, where the Cowboys will face Temple (8-4, 5-3) out of the Mid-American Conference. The two teams have met only once before, with Wyoming winning the contest 38-23 in Laramie on Sept. 1, 1990. Wyoming will make its 13th overall bowl appearance and its second trip to the New Mexico Bowl. The Pokes defeated Fresno State, 35-28, in the 2009 New Mexico Bowl. The New Mexico Bowl will be played at University Stadium in Albuquerque on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Noon MT on ESPN.
