COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV freshman forward Anthony Bennett has been named the Mountain West Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games through December 9. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for Bennett.
Bennett helped No. 21/18 UNLV to a 2-0 record on the road last week with wins at Portland and California. In Tuesday's 68-60 victory against the Pilots, the Brampton, Ontario, native scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-11 (.545) shooting from the field, while adding six rebounds, a career-high three steals and one blocked shot in 29 minutes of action. Bennett scored the Rebels' first seven points of the contest, finishing with 11 overall in the opening 20 minutes of play.
On Sunday at Cal, he tallied game- and career-highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds in recording his second double-double of the season. The freshman forward was 9-of-17 (.529) from the field and also had a steal in 35 minutes of play. With the teams trading baskets and neither side holding more than a two-point lead down the stretch, Bennett scored six of the Rebels' final eight points over the last 1:36 as UNLV escaped with the 76-75 victory.
For the week, Bennett averaged 21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the field and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free throw line.
