MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DARINGTON HOBSON, JR., G/F, LAS VEGAS, NEV. (NEW MEXICO)
New Mexico junior guard/forward Darington Hobson led the Lobos to a 4-0 record last week, including a 3-0 mark at the World Vision Classic. The Las Vegas, Nev., native opened the week with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a 97-87 victory at in-state rival New Mexico State. At the World Vision Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., Hobson received Most Valuable Player honors after tallying a combined 55 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals in wins over Nicholls State (83-59), Louisiana Tech (81-52) and Miami, Ohio (85-60). Hobson registered his first career double-double in the Louisiana Tech contest with personal-bests of 30 points and 10 rebounds, marking the most points scored by a Lobo since J.R. Giddens netted 30 in overtime against BYU on Feb. 26, 2008. For the week, Hobson was 22-of-49 (.449) from the field and 6-of-14 (.429) from 3-point range, while averaging 18.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 27.8 minutes played per game.
LAST WEEK
Mountain West teams posted a collective 15-5 record in non-conference play last week. New Mexico ran its record to 5-0 with wins over New Mexico State (97-87), Nicholls State (83-59), Louisiana Tech (81-52) and Miami, Ohio (85-60), with the latter three games coming as part of the World Vision Classic in Albuquerque. BYU and UNLV also remained undefeated at 3-0 each as the Cougars rollled past Idaho State (87-53) and host Hawai'i (83-65), while the Runnin' Rebels beat Nevada (88-75) and Southern Illinois (78-69). Utah and Wyoming both won their respective match-ups as the Utes topped Utah State (68-67) and Southern (88-48), while the Cowboys routed Peru State (120-73) and Boise State (87-61). Air Force split its two match-ups in the Falcons' own Reggie Minton Classic, defeating Dickinson State (95-77) and falling to Northern Colorado (70-46). San Diego State also went 1-1 last week, losing at Saint Mary's (80-58) and beating Santa Clara (86-53). In addition to a 90-77 loss at Nebraska, TCU split its first two outings of the NIT Season Tip-Off, defeating Cal State Northridge (83-65) before dropping a narrow 52-49 decision to host Arizona State. Colorado State lost a tough 65-60 outing at Indiana State in its only game of the week.
UPCOMING GAMES
Twenty-one games against non-conference opponents are on tap for the week of Nov. 23-29, highlighted by a nationally-televised meeting between Louisville and UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 28. UNLV handed Louisville one of just two losses in Freedom Hall last season and the Cardinals will be looking for revenge when they visit the Runnin' Rebels at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. VERSUS will carry the broadcast, which is set to tip off at 1 p.m. PT. Two other non-conference match-ups will also be nationally-televised this week. Wyoming visits Denver in a Wednesday, Nov. 25, meeting that will be aired on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, starting at 7 p.m. MT, while BYU's home contest against Weber State on Friday, Nov. 27, will be televised on The Mtn.-MountainWest Sports Network, beginning at 7:30 p.m. MT.
MWC-MVC CHALLENGE
The Mountain West Conference moved out to a 2-1 advantage in the inaugural Mountain West/Missouri Valley challenge as Colorado State and UNLV combined for a 1-1 mark in two Challenge games last Friday. The Rams dropped a 65-60 decision at Indiana State, while UNLV posted a 78-69 win at home against Southern Illinois. The 2009-10 edition of the MWC/MVC Challenge is the first in a four-year agreement between the Mountain West and Missouri Valley Conferences. Nine Challenge games will be played each year, and each conference will host a total of 18 games in the four-year period. Evansville, by virtue of finishing the 2007-08 MVC regular season in 10th place, will be the Valley team that does not participate in the 2009 Challenge Series. UNM'S ROMAN MARTINEZ CANDIDATE FOR LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD
New Mexico senior forward Roman Martinez is among 30 candidates for the 2009-10 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, character, community and competition. An acronym for "Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School", the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Martinez leads the Lobos and ranks fourth in the league with a 21.0 scoring average this season. The El Paso, Texas, native is a three-time Academic All-MWC honoree and was named to the ESPN the Magainze Academic All-District VI team in 2009. An active member of the Albuquerque community, Martinez was accepted to the UNM Anderson School of Management a year ago and carries a 3.44 cumulative grade point average. The list of candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four "Cs" of classroom, character, community and competition. The winner will be announced at the 2010 NCAA Men's Final Four® in Indianapolis in April.
MWC CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS
The MWC Championship returns to the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev., March 10-13, for the eighth time in the league's 11-year history. The MWC Tournament was held in Las Vegas from 2000-2003 before moving to Denver's Pepsi Center for three years (2004-06). The 2011-13 MWC Tournaments will also take place at the Thomas & Mack Center.
MWC COACHES
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher is the dean of Mountain West Conference men's basketball coaches. Fisher is in his 11th season at the helm of the Aztec program and is the only MWC coach to hold his current position since the inception of the conference in 1999. UNLV head coach Lon Kruger is the second-longest tenured coach in the league, now in his sixth season with the Runnin' Rebels. BYU's Dave Rose is in his fifth season with the Cougars, while Air Force's Jeff Reynolds, Colorado State's Tim Miles, New Mexico's Steve Alford, Utah's Jim Boylen and Wyoming's Heath Schroyer are each in their third year with their respective programs. Jim Christian is in his second year at TCU.

RETURNING STARTERS/LETTERWINNERS
In 2009-10, Mountain West teams feature rosters that total 67 returning letterwiners, including 23 starters, the second-lowest tally in league history. Youth will be served in 2009-10, as this season's 38-member freshman class is the largest for the MWC since a league-record 40 freshmen hit the courts in 2005-06. Meanwhile, the 2009-10 sophomore class of 37 is a conference-high. The upperclassmen are largely outnumbered with 29 juniors matching a league-low (three previous times) and 24 seniors ranking as the second-fewest number (22 in 2007-08). Following is a breakdown of the 2009-10 rosters.

GOING DANCING
Over its 10-year history, the Mountain West has received 22 bids to the NCAA Tournament, including 13 at-large berths. The MWC has had at least one at-large qualifier in nine of those 10 years, including eight straight. The only year in which the MWC sent a lone representative to the Big Dance was in 2000-01, when BYU, Utah and Wyoming shared the regular-season title and the Cougars captured the league's automatic bid by winning the MWC Tournament. Below is a breakdown of the league's NCAA participants by year. The Mountain West was not eligible to receive an automatic bid in its first year (1999-00). UNLV and Utah earned at-large bids to the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
